Some info and thoughts

  • “My Life” is inspired by my average weekday. It could be a day in the life of any person not living in a warzone. I contrasted it with the lives of imaginary people who live in warzones, are fleeing them or are traveling to them. This allowed me a bigger spectrum than solely writing about one person would have.
  • “Their Life” is inspired by news media articles about the war in Ukraine. I wrote the piece just a few months after the war started but have since removed the references to Ukraine because it could apply to other wars too.
  • The Western media (and consequently the people, including myself) paid and still pays a lot more attention to the war in Ukraine than to other wars. There are several reasons for this, which this article explains brilliantly. I’m also adding a Wikipedia page with a list of ongoing armed conflictsΒ because we should all try to be aware of the fact that they exist.
